High-Purity Quartz Glass Plates: Material Properties and Industrial Applications

High-purity quartz glass plates, fabricated from fused silica (SiO₂ purity ≥99.99%), are essential optical and structural materials widely adopted in semiconductors, optical instrumentation, laboratory analysis and UV sterilization industries. Their unique combination of thermal, optical and chemical properties distinguishes them from common soda-lime glass and borosilicate glass.

One core advantage lies in outstanding thermal performance. Quartz glass plates have an ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient of 5.5 × 10⁻⁷ /°C. They can continuously withstand working temperatures up to 1100°C and resist sharp thermal shocks without cracking, making them suitable for high-temperature observation windows and heating carrier plates.

Optically, UV-grade quartz glass plates deliver excellent transmittance across deep ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared bands. Unlike ordinary glass that absorbs UV light, premium quartz plates transmit over 90% of UV light at 254 nm, which is critical for UV disinfection equipment, photochemical reaction platforms and spectral analysis instruments. Surface finishing options include polishing, fine grinding and fire polishing to meet different optical and sealing requirements.

Chemically, fused silica demonstrates strong inertness against most acids, organic solvents and corrosive gases. Only hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated alkali can erode the material. In semiconductor manufacturing, precision-cut quartz plates serve as carrier substrates and viewing windows, minimizing metal contamination during wafer processing. Other mainstream applications include solar equipment, laser systems and biochemical testing chambers.

Manufacturers can customize dimensions, holes, notches and surface treatments according to client drawings. Industry insiders state that the growing demand for UV technology and advanced chip manufacturing will continue driving market expansion for high-grade quartz glass plates in the next several years.
